Drive

The GX11 and GM8 disc motor family

An axial magnetic field design makes the motor far thinner than conventional radial designs, so no machine room is needed and headroom is reduced. The permanent magnet synchronous construction removes the gearbox and oil maintenance, and markedly lowers noise. The GX11 family holds the international Red Dot design award.

Control

The NOVA IoT control system

A dual data redundant architecture with monitored safety circuits reaches SIL3 under IEC 61508, the highest safety integrity level attainable in the industry. The system is also an IoT node: each unit is registered with its own network identification code, its operating data is monitored remotely and pre-failure trends can be detected.

Positioning

Absolute shaft signalling

Car position is always known against an absolute reference. This removes the need for a recalibration run after a power cut, brings levelling accuracy close to zero and means no perceptible step in bed elevators. Vector transformation technology tracks car displacement to millimetre precision.

Energy

Regenerative energy recovery

When the car travels down loaded or up empty, the motor behaves as a generator. Instead of dissipating that energy as heat, the regenerative drive returns it to the building supply, giving savings of up to 20% depending on usage intensity. It is standard on the GPS55 platform from 2.5 m/s upwards.

Rope

KONE UltraRope™

Made of a carbon fibre core with a high-friction special coating, this rope is far lighter than steel. Because the suspension system carries less of its own weight, single travel heights of up to 500 metres become possible, energy consumption falls and rope life is extended.

Validation

A 350-metre-deep test shaft

KONE's test centre in Tytyri, Finland is the world's deepest elevator test shaft, built inside a former limestone mine. High-speed elevators are tested here over real travel heights, beyond laboratory conditions.

What does Class A mean?

An elevator's energy consumption is classified under two separate standards. The GiantKONE range sits in the top tier of both.

Class A energy efficiency

The German Association of Engineers guideline classifies a lift from A to G on both its travel and its standby consumption. In buildings with light daily use, standby can account for more than half the total bill, which is why automatic power-down of lighting, fan and control board in standby is decisive.

ISO 25745-2

Class A energy performance

The international standard evaluates a lift by usage category, taking into account the number of trips per day, average travel distance and load profile. This makes a residential lift and a hospital lift comparable within their own usage realities.
